 What ...?

What is RDFunding anyway?

RDFunding provides the latest information on health-related research funding opportunities, including social care. It is one of the services provided by RDInfo which is part of the National Institute for Health Research. The information supplied is gathered from a wide range of sources, but we are always on the look out for new information, so feel free to send us details of anything we don't currently hold.

What type of information is available?

RDFunding is based on a centralised database containing up-to-date details on potential FUNDING ORGANISATIONS and associated GRANT / AWARDS:

  • Funding Organisation Information provides an overview of the aims, priorities, consideration process of applications, general information and web-links (where applicable) relating to the potential funder.
  • Grant /Award Information provides details of the latest awards available including level of funding, specific application criteria as well as the closing date for receipt of applications. A web-link to the grant details and associated application forms will also be available (where applicable).
The database currently holds information from 1464 Funding Bodies offering 5603 different awards

Funding opportunities listed in the database cover a broad spectrum of research interests, including Primary Care, Biomedicine and Health Management/Policy Research. These are presented within 10 main categories:

1) Equipment Grants
2) Fellowships
3) General
4) Prizes
5) Project
6) Programmes
7) Seminars/Conferences
8) Studentships
9) Training Bursaries
10) Travels Awards

Whilst the aim is to ensure the information contained on the RDFunding database is as comprehensive as possible, inevitably some opportunities will be missed or from time to time deadlines may change, it is therefore important to check with the relevant funding body. The amount and type of opportunities listed on the database is reviewed at regular intervals and those areas that are under-represented, targeted.

What support is available to users?

RDFunding is supported by guidance notes on How to get the most out of the web site. How to get the most out of the web site. In addition, we are happy to organise a workshop on how to obtain research funding which can be tailored to meet your professional background or an organisations specialty. If you would like to receive copies of the guidance notes or wish to to know more about the workshops, including costs and discuss your requirements please telephone 0113 295 1122 or email

 Why do .?

Why do some grants have guesstimate next to them?

These are grants that have been offered in the past, and may well be offered again in the future. The date of the future call has not been confirmed but if available, it is likely to be in the month shown. There is no commitment that the award will be offered again.

Why do some grants appear greyed out?

These are grants that have been offered in the past, but may not be offered again in the future. These give you an idea of the type of funding previously offered by the organisation/institution.

Why do you advertise awards from foreign countries?

When we do this, we have checked that the awards are available to UK based researchers. It is increasingly the case that awards are available to anyone in the world as this helps to ensure that the grant giver is getting the best possible research for their money. An example of this policy is the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. They identify health problems of relevance to the American public and then seek the best research (from anywhere in the world) to solve these problems. The UK is the most successful foreign country in gaining research funding from the NIH.

 Who do .?

Who do I contact if the information is out of date, incomplete or incorrect?

We try to keep all the information as timely and as accurate as possible but do occasionally make mistakes. We're very grateful for any feedback about this site and if you notice any errors please email us at . We will endeavour to correct any mistakes as swiftly as possible.

Who do I contact about a specific funding opportunity?

General contact information for the organisation/institution will appear at the top of the main charity page. Many organisations have a research co-ordinator or grants administrator as a contact for the awards offered. In such cases, their name and phone number will appear at the bottom of each grant page. In all cases you should contact the person listed as the contact for the grant. All the information we have is shown, so it won't help to ring us asking for more details! However, feel free should you require other assistance.
