The last three extracts from "Clinical Investigation and Statistics in Laboratory Medicine" by Jones RG and Payne RB are provided mainly for laboratory staff and clinicians but will also be useful for other healthcare professionals. The book is published by : ACB Venture Publications, and covers the whole area of study design and statistical analysis. The book can be purchase from Amazon.co.uk

The authors assume that the reader has access to a computer with statistical software for inspection and analysis of data, so the book is not like an automobile engineer's manual, explaining in detail how statistical calculations work. Rather, it is like a road map, an itinerary and a Highway Code, making it simple to travel from the starting point, the definition of the question, through collection and validation of data and its analysis using the best statistical program to the destination, interpretation of the results. The authors make liberal use of diagrams and illustrations but sparing use of equations and symbols.

Compatible software is available for this book from the suppliers of ANALYSE-IT

The book includes brief biographies of five scientists who made major contributions to the development of medical statistics and evidence-based medicine - Johann Gauss, R A Fisher, Edwards Deming, Austin Bradford Hill and Archie Cochrane.
