Daniel Turnberg Trust Fund
Description: The Daniel Turnberg Trust Fund UK/Middle East Travel Fellowships. A new exchange scheme to encourage collaboration between medical researchers in the UK and the Middle East. What the scheme provides: - Short-term exchange of medical researchers between the UK and Middle East. - Opportunities to gain further research experience, learn new techniques and to foster scientific collaboration between scientists. - Provision of airfare and a subsistence allowance for periods of up to four weeks.

The Denis Burkitt Study Award
Description: The award can be used as a contribution towards travel costs for elective projects and/or other research costs such as small equipment, laboratory costs, biomedical resources etc, although projects without direct costs (e.g. literature reviews) will also be considered. In order to qualify for an Award, the project must centre on food and nutrition and their relationship to health and disease in a developing country or countries. Applicants must demonstrate that their proposed research fulfills a gap in current knowledge and contributes to current thinking in the field of nutrition science chosen.
Funding : Up to ten Awards will be presented and these will usually be a minimum amount of £750, although the level of financial support will be directly related to the quality and significance of the research proposal and the requirements of the application. The total fund for this year is £7,500.

Medawar Prize
Description: The top 8 abstracts submitted are invited to present in the Medawar Session. The work must be presented by the candidate and must be original and innovative and have been performed largely or entirely within the United Kingdom. Candidates for the prize will be limited to the first author of the submitted paper. In the rare event that the first author cannot present the paper, it must be withdrawn from competition (although the work may be presented by another author in another section of the meeting). Candidates must take note of the meeting dates when submitting their abstract and are expected to make strenuous efforts to ensure that they can present their paper on time.
Funding : The prize will consist of a medal and a cheque for £500 presented during the meeting at which the paper is given.

Small Grant Scheme
Description: The Small grant scheme was established by Diabetes UK to enable researchers to undertake small research projects or pilot studies. It is not intended to be used for ‘Top-up’ funds and applicants should remember when applying that the entire research budget comes from donations from supporters and members. If funds for small projects can be found within the applicant’s institution, then this support should be sought.
Funding : A small grant offers a maximum of £15,000 under this scheme. Support is typically requested for up to one year; however, longer periods of time may be requested if scientifically justified.

European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS)

Summer School
Description: Participants attend three consecutive summer schools held across Europe. In year one, the summer school is two weeks long, in years two and three it is for one week. For new applicants, the 2009 summer school will be from 22nd June to 3rd July 2009 in the city of Turku, Finland.

Castelli Pedroli Prize
Description: The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions which have been carried out in Europe by a member of the EASD normally residing in Europe. The recipient of the prize will be required to deliver a lecture named in honour of Camillo Golgi during the EASD Annual Meeting to be held in Vienna 29th September - 2nd October 2009.

European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS)

Uschi Tschabitscher Prize for Young Neurologists
Description: The tournament will be carried out in two groups, one on clinical related research, and one on basic neurological science. The Congress Programme Committee will select 6 candidates for each tournament group on the basis of the contents of the abstracts submitted. The clinical subjects should be received from authors who all work in Europe and thus carry out their projects in Europe. For the basic science session, clinical relevance will be weighted. The Congress Programme Committee reserves the right to assign in which session the presentation will take place.
Funding : The winner of each group will receive the Uschi Tschabitscher Prize for Young Neurologists consisting of: Free registration at the 14th EFNS Congress in Geneva, September 25th-28th, 2010, up to four nights hotel accommodation, a travel grant, as well as €1,000. The prize is not transferable and participation in the 14th Congress of the EFNS will not be paid off in cash.

REMEDIC Short Visit Grants
Description: REMEDIC is offering funding for a number of Short Visit Grants to take place in 2009 (15 days) for young (registered as PhD students and other young scientists) and senior scientists (post-doc, already PhD) working on topics related to the scientific objectives of the Regenerative Medicine programme.
Funding : Short Visit Grants are reimbursed on a per diem basis of 85 EUR plus actual travel expenses up to a maximum of 500 EUR. Travel will be refunded on the basis of actual costs and on the basis of APEX type airfares or 2nd class train travel for shorter distances. REMEDIC Exchange Grants
Description: These grants are especially directed to young scientists (registered as PhD students and other young scientists) that propose to visit laboratories that have new/recent "omics", molecular or other techniques in operation and volunteer to teach the applicants these techniques, particularly if the application is from a laborotory where the use of these techniques has no long tradition.
Funding : Exchange Grants are reimbursed on the basis of an allowance of 400 EUR per week plus actual travel expenses of up to a maximum of 500 EUR. Translational Stem Cell Research Programme - Response mode funding
Description: The TSCRC will consider applications whose goals will advance stem cell research towards clinical use or application, including: * enabling technological development * preclinical stem cell research * experimental medicine * early phase clinical trials. The TSCRC will fund projects that go beyond the understanding of basic stem cell biology or using stem cells to probe the mechanisms of disease (which will be funded through the MRC boards), with the intention of supporting the application of such research to a stage where further funding can be found to continue development towards the latter stages of therapeutic or technological development.

Lifelong Health and Wellbeing Phase 2
Description: Funds will be available through two modes of support: LLHW Collaborative grants to support high quality innovative research by multi-disciplinary teams of researchers in strategic partnership with users and stakeholders. Collaborative Development Networks - to establish multi-disciplinary partnerships focused on developing a research strategy within the priority areas highlighted in the call.

Description: 1st Global Philips AVENT Breastfeeding Prize 2009, in co-operation with the Italian Society of Perinatal Medicine (SIMP). Prizes will be presented in Berlin at the 9th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine from 24th-28th October 2009.
